making a kitchen island with stock cabinets
Many consist of little more than a couple of cabinets, a custom-size countertop, some trim and maybe some shelves. with just a few simplifications (and a lot less money), you can build a completely legit kitchen island with two stock cabinets, a countertop and some basic lumber.. Looks amazing!!! your post is so timely—i’m actually making a kitchen island from a sink base stock cabinet–also from home depot. love your design!! i’m using 1x4s as my trim and actually trimmed down thin sheets of plywood for the sides and am doing something funky w/ a herringbone wood pattern where the stools will go.. We started the process of looking at islands made out of kitchen cabinets and didn’t find much, we got some old cabinets from facebook marketplace. we had trouble leveling them so we used a few wooden shims and tried some re-arranging, also used 1inch pieces of wood between the cabinets to make them more separated and give the doors more space.. making a kitchen island with stock cabinets
Kitchen islands are the most versatile addition to any kitchen. they add counter space, centralize cooking areas, add seating and eating areas and appeal to a kitchen layout. the hardest part about making a kitchen island is deciding what to make it with. some use base cabinets, and others use wall. Before placing the countertop on the cabinet, make sure to measure all the way around so that there is an equal overhang on all sides (image 1). fasten 5/8" screws through the plastic brackets and anchor them into the solid wood undersurface (image 2). the new custom made kitchen island is complete and ready for placement (image 3)..
