The only downside to trim (etc) first is that the flooring guys have to do a good job of cutting the door jambs to just the right height so the hardwood can just slip under them. if it is a site finished hardwood floor i have the boards nailed down before any trim but sanded and finished after most trim and paint but before the shoe mold.. We are in the middle of a complete gut and renovation on our house. we are a few weeks away from flooring and we are doing hardwood throughout and then carpet in the bedrooms. my questions is do we install the hardwood first of or the carpet first? the hardwood will go down the hallway and will butt up to the carpet at each bedroom door. i am just trying to plan the proper sequence.. I have done this and i always have the hardwood installed first. then i install the ceramic tile. to protect the hardwood floor from getting grout or glue on it i cover the hardwood floor with a. Opt for floor installation first because it's often a messy process. a gutted room eliminates much of the dirt and grime associated with removing old carpet, tile or wood flooring..
