fastest way to sand wood by hand

On the other hand, if you start with sandpaper that's too fine, it'll take forever to sand out defects. in most cases, 80-grit paper is a good starting point for sanding planed or shaped wood. start with 100-grit if the wood is already smooth with no deep scratches, planer marks or other surface defects.. Sanding cross-grain tears the wood fibers so the sanding scratches show up much more, especially under a stain. the best policy is to always sand in the direction of the grain when possible. the scratching that does occur is then more likely to be disguised by the grain of the wood.. When sanding hardwoods, the goal is usually the smoothest surface possible, but this is not the case when sanding an exterior deck surface. for sanding deck floorboards, use sandpapers with grits no rougher than 60 or 80. sanding with finer-grit papers (100-grit or above) will smooth the wood to the point where the pores begin to close down, which will hinder the absorption of stain or sealer.

Delicate sanding is done by hand with custom-made tools. cut a piece of 100-grit sandpaper into square pieces and use your fingers to shape it around rounded moldings and trim. wrap strips around a dowel and use the dowel to sand curves and profiled moldings. cut some 1/4-by-3/4-by-3-inch sticks and flatten the ends..
