Wood drying (also seasoning lumber or wood seasoning) reduces the moisture content of wood before its use. when the drying is done in a kiln, the product is known as kiln-dried timber or lumber, whereas air drying is the more traditional method.. there are two main reasons for drying wood: woodworking when wood is used as a construction material, whether as a structural support in a building. Plan to dry fresh wood for at least one year. the standard guideline for drying wood used in woodworking is allowing one year for each inch of thickness. measure your wood and decide how many years it will need to be set aside in your air-drying apparatus. this is a good guideline for commonly used wood like walnut, cherry and oaks.. One good way of seeing if the wood is dry is get two pieces, and clapping them together. if the sounds are more dull then the wood is still wet, but if it’s a more hollow sound then it’s dry. something else you can try but really only works if you have had a fire going, and you have some coals still going..

First check some wood that has been in your shop for months or years and compare to the wood that was just moved into the shop from the garage after a week or three. use your judgement . . . maybe if your basement is heated but damp you may have to store the wood for the current project in the space it will be when it is a final peice of. Chris marshall: whether wood is kiln-dried or air-dried, the goal is to draw as much water out of the wood as possible, which stabilizes it into something useable for woodworking and stops the potential for fungal growth. once wood is dried to 8 to 10 percent moisture content in a given shop environment, it is “stable” for woodworking..
